We grow our own fruit and make our own wine but it’s not all we do We also supply grapes to other wineries, share our winemaking facilities and in some cases, we even make the wine for other wine brands It’s an important part of Grava and allows us to craft a sustainable business in every sense of the word We think New Zealand wine has a bright future but only if we work together and share our knowledge and skills You know how the saying goes — it takes a village

Grava Services

  • Located in the heart of Martinborough, our medium-sized winery is fully equipped to produce exceptional wines onsite.

The Grava facility is designed to accommodate a range of production volumes, handling both red and white grape varieties with precision and care. Our press has a capacity of up to five tonnes per load, allowing us to efficiently process fruit during harvest.

Grava winemaker and co-owner Alistair Gardner brings over 20 years of winemaking experience, both in New Zealand and abroad. His expertise has resulted in award-winning wines for several of our contract clients. We are proud to maintain strong, collaborative relationships with wine brands that share our passion for quality and character.

In addition to winemaking, we offer bottling and wine storage services.

Please note: The winery is BioGro certified and operates as a Customs Controlled Area.

If you're a grape grower interested in discussing contract winemaking or related services with Alistair and the team, please get in touch.

  • We enjoy the collaborative and intellectual camaraderie that comes from working with a number of different winemakers over the course of a harvest.

If you are a winemaker who currently does not have a winery to make your wine at, and an interest in making your wine at our winery in Martinborough, we may have some space for you to do that.

Get in touch to discuss your requirements, and whether we can accommodate you.

  • Some vintages we make our organic grapes available in small amounts to purchase.  If you are interested, please contact Alistair to discuss.

    Vineyard and Grape information:
Our vineyard is located eight kilometres south of the Martinborough township and is situated on the Ruamahanga River terraces which make up the free-draining gravelly soils that are home to Grava.  The alluvial deposits from the river have provided the basis of the silty loam soils (Typic Argillic Pallic Soil) on which the vineyard has been established.

We grow three grape varieties - Pinot Noir (clones 115, 777 and Abel), Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

In 2023, Grava became BioGro Certified No. 6282.
